Mindfulness: Realizing the Power of Now

So the other day I came across this interesting talk by Andy Puddicombe on TED Talks about being mindful and experiencing the present rather than thinking about past or future. It kind of touched me as I realized I’ve also been lost quite often in the past or future and not lived in the current moment. It’s easy to be distracted by thoughts and you might also find yourself thinking about other matters of your life as you try to concentrate on doing what you currently do at the present.

This talk gave me some insights into how I can experience the present moment. By doing some meditations you can relax your mind and control your mind. You can even improve your memory and focus. There are even some meditation apps that help you to practice this skill. I invite you to listen to this talk and the other interesting talks I’ve shared below. Here’s a couple of mobile apps for practicing meditation:

There’s also a book called “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle, which talks about the same concepts and how our ego stops us from living the present moment. Emotions like fear, anxiety, stress, jealousy, greed cause our ego to grow like a cancer and stops us from being happy. Happiness is by realizing the present moment, enjoying what you have, not worrying about what’s going to happen in future and not being sad about the past. As Imam Ali (a.s) said:

“How strange and foolish is man. He loses his health in gaining wealth. Then, to regain his health he wastes his wealth. He ruins his present while worrying about his future, but weeps in the future by recalling his past. He lives as though death shall never come to him, but dies in a way as if he were never born”
