Time travel a possibility: Hawking

World famous scientist Stephen Hawking has suggested that time travel may be possible.

Hawking, a theoretical physicist, believes we may one day be able to head into the future, using spaceships of such high speeds that distant star systems could be reached within the lifetime of the crew.

In theory, at speeds of one billion kilometres per hour, he reportedly suggests that a day on board the ship would be the same as a year on earth. However, it could take six years to reach those speeds.

Hawking said, “After another two years of full thrust the ship would reach full speed, 98 pre cent of the speed of light, and each day on the ship would be a year on Earth. At such speeds a trip to the edge of the galaxy would take just 80 years for those on board.”

Hawking also considers the possibility that on their return, humans who travel to the future may end up repopulating the human race if disaster occurs in their absence.

He was speaking in a new documentary, ‘Stephen Hawking’s Universe’. He also admits that he shied away from time travel discussions in the past.

“Time travel was once considered scientific heresy,” he said.

“I used to avoid talking about it for fear of being labelled a crank.”

Time travel to the past has been dismissed by the physicist. He reportedly called it a “mad scientist paradox”.

Hawking made headlines last month when he suggested that aliens may exist, but that mankind should avoid contact with them.

British media quoted him as saying, “If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the Native Americans.”
